FAQ

I need to have a blood test - what does this involve?

A blood test involves taking blood from a vein in your arm. Different tests require different tubes so more than one tube may be taken. All tubes will be labeled with the patient's name, date of birth and date of collection. After the blood has been collected and needle removed, pressure is applied to the site to stop the bleeding. A gauze or bandage will be applied to the site.

What does 'fasting' involve?

Fasting requires a patient not having anything to eat or drink for a period of 10-12 hours before the test. You may drink water only if an overnight fast is required, after your last meal (note the time), eat nothing until the following morning after you blood has been collected.

Do I still take my medications?

All medication should be taken as normal unless otherwise instructed by your physician.

How do I know that my samples will not be mixed up in the laboratory?

When your blood is collected the phlebotomist will confirm with you that all information is correct. Each sample is carefully labeled after collection with patient's name, date of birth and date of collection. A laboratory number is given to your request form and samples to ensure they are not mixed up. This number is unique and assists to ensure that the correct tests are performed on each sample. We have other checks in place throughout the testing procedure to ensure the testing is performed at the highest possible standard.

When will my results be ready?

Routine blood test results are generally available within 24 hours of collection. However, some testing is more involved and may take longer. Microbiology Cultures i.e. urine, stool, vaginal, wound will take 48-72 hours.
